First clash of the year...

Lily brought home homework this afternoon that consisted of her having to write numbers 1 to 1000.  Would someone please explain to us what the point is?  My step sister, who teaches 3rd grade said that the assignment was ridiculous.  Hmmmm.....  Casey is writing an inflammatory letter as I type.  Joy.
